DAY BY DAY PRODUCT ITINERARY:
DAY 1 CUSCO – SACRED VALLEY
Welcome to the Incan city of Cusco. Upon arrival, you will be picked up from the airport and privately escorted to your hotel in the Sacred Valley to rest and slowly acclimatize.
DAY 2 SACRED VALLEY (B)
Today you will visit the salt mines of Maras where intense white shines, like snow on a sunny day - an impressive sight for any visitor. Salt was extracted from these mines from Inca times on and the same method has been used ever since. You then head to Moray. The circular terraces hidden among the hills are similar to a Greek amphitheater. Surrounded by an impressive backdrop of snow covered mountains, Moray was used as an open-air agricultural lab for adapting crops to different environmental conditions. Finally you will visit the fortress of Ollantaytambo where the Temple of the Sun (formed of six gigantic monoliths, whose total weight exceeds 50 tons) and the Terrace of the Ten Niches stand out.
DAY 3 SACRED VALLEY – INCA TRAIL – MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO (B,BoxedL,D)
Your 2-day Inca Trail adventure starts with pick up from your hotel to bring you to the railway station and board the train heading to Machu Picchu Pueblo. Escorted by your guide you descend at kilometer 104 – the starting point of today’s hike to Machu Picchu. En-route stop by the Inca ruins of Chachabamba (2,150 m/ 7,054 ft), which is noted for its complex irrigation channels and expert stone masonry. Your route will soon lead along misty cloud-forest paths, moss covered stairs and numerous mountain lookout points, before arriving at the well preserved, imposing ancient compound at Winay Wayna. After a lunch break you head to Inti Punku or ‘Sun Gate’, the place where you will get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Before dark, a secondary trail will take you down to the village of Machu Picchu Pueblo to spend the night at the selected hotel where dinner will be included. Distance: 8km / 4.9 miles Walking time: 6 to 7 hours Starting altitude: 2150m / 7054ft Max. altitude: 2700m / 8,858ft
DAY 4 MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO - CUSCO (B)
A very early start this morning is essential if catching the first bus back to Machu Picchu (a 20-minute ride) and enjoying the best, uninterrupted views of the early-morning sun rising above the main complex without the crowds. Your private guide will then be on hand for a personal, informed, two-hour walking tour. Once the formal section of the tour is complete, there will be free time to explore the citadel on your own. Around 13:00 hrs get aboard the shuttle bus that brings you to Machu Picchu Pueblo town for a lunch break (lunch not included) before taking the train back to Ollantaytambo. Walking time: 2 to 3 hours Starting altitude: 2,000m / 6,561ft Max. altitude: 2400m / 7,874ft
DAY 5 CUSCO (B)
This morning you walk through the major sites of interest in Cusco. You visit the famous cathedral with its magnificently carved woodwork, ornate altar and many hundreds of canvases from the 17th-century Cusco Painting School. You continue exploring the cultural wealth of Cusco at the Temple of the Sun where we witness the incredible masonry of the Incas, an engineering feat that remains an enigma. Afterwards you walk along Hatunrumiyoc Street named after the 12-angled stone clearly visible in the remaining walls of what used to be Inca Roca’s Palace. You make a last stop in San Blas artisan quarter. Its steeped cobblestone alleys not only offer spectacular views of the city but are lined with workshops and galleries, a great way to soak in Cusco's artistic atmosphere. Once done, at proper time, you will be privately escorted to the airport for your upcoming flight (late check-out is not included).
